Cryptaud This is probably not what you'll expect. It certainly wasn't what I expected. But as it built and flowed and ebbed and spoke and sang, I recognized that it on one level acknowledges its status as music, building another world inside its art while existing within our own; it states this clearly and comment on it. As a piece, New Isolationism is incredibly beautiful, clever, creative, and just cool to listen to. Favorite track: Fourth Movement (Decay).

ggarfo quetzal is the greatest jazz musician currently alive, as much as she denies it. Favorite track: Second Movement (Blossom).

about

Beginning the year of 2022 with a solo performance of the written improvisation piece New Isolationism, Quetzal Tirado bursts into the new year with exemplary restraint and crushing solitude on this bass clarinet performance. Originally meant for a big band of improvisers, New Isolationism is a mission statement for the contemporary improviser to attempt to break the boundaries set by conventions and go outside of expectations. Each movement creates a tense, grotesque but interesting atmosphere that does not let up until the album concludes. We sincerely hope you have a great year and enjoy this work.

"Happy new year. New Isolationism is all about us, the young people. It's something completely new in a sense. I wanted to both do something of an homage to the people that inspire me but also do something that was fundamentally me. I wanted this to be a piece that was a pure reflection of the performer, and what better way to showcase that than a demonstration condensed into just me playing my favorite instrument I own. I'd like to dedicate this performance to Anthony Braxton, and be the herald of a new, better year."
