DoomZappo A standout release amid an extremely productive year for this free improviser, Camaraderie teams her up with a sextet of colleagues to deliver an extended spiritual jazz freakout session that feels simultaneously wild and untamed and yet also warm, genuine and approachable. Favorite track: Comes from Within.

about

In an interesting new venture for her discography, this page welcomes the Quetzal Tirado Unit, currently in the form of a sextet. This band was conceived during her brief but eventful visit to Leeds and assembled with the help of collaborator and friend, multi-instrumentalist Nika Ticciati, who plays a mean upright piano on the recording, creating gorgeous sounds. Appearing once again also is Teruki Chan, tempering the fury of the band with his immense control over percussion. Capping off the rhythm section is Jarred Dean on fretless bass, an unusual but all the more unique choice for a spiritual sextet, with some incredible sounds and drive. Helping Quetzal with horn duties, we also applaud Sam Ehret-Pickett of the Amon Ra Collective, who were kind enough to host Quetzal in concert as a guest during her stay, performing in both serenity and passion here on a multitude of brass horns, as well as Harvey Parkin-Christie, whose control over reeds serves the record immensely, both as a driving force and as a breathtaking soloist.
The music was improvised along vague instructions dreamt up by Tirado, with the first song taking the shape of a classic long and repetitious jam, à la Pharoah Sanders, described by Ticciati also as a "post-Beefheart" track. Its continuation frees up the structure to give way to more odd instrumentation and complete freedom in passion and fury, creating something more akin to Don Cherry's early works with European players. The conclusion then takes all this energy and channels it into a devotion for beauty in the form of a shorter, slowly moving ballad, formed and put to rest by the keys of Ticciati's upright.
This record was the first time the Unit performed, during an early morning recording session in Leeds, but is definitely not the last. We sincerely hope you find as much joy and devotion in this music as the players did.
The painting on the cover was graciously bestowed upon the Unit by Marie McAuliffe, who aside from being a ridiculously talented visual artist, also works as a multi-instrumentalist in several projects, such as Hypomanic Daydream or Putrescine. Her collaboration with Quetzal will continue with the band Motheaten.
All music on the album was recorded on January 28th, 2023, in Leeds, UK.

"I'm so thankful for all five of these ridiculously talented musicians for creating this record with me. It is, as of right now, my absolute favorite thing I've ever been involved with, and I'm happy to call these people my collaborators, and dare I say, friends. Please make sure to stay tuned for more wild phantasms from the Unit, and listen to everyone else involved, they're all as wild as they are creative. Love and peace."
